FREE fitted crib sheet pattern and tutorial!

Here for you today, I’m going to share with you my free pattern and tutorial for making your own fitted crib sheets.  I used this a few weeks back while making some for my 5 month old daughter Honor’s nursery crib redo project.  It cost about $10, more than half the price of the ones I wanted to buy, and it was incredibly easy to do.  Even beginner sewers, such as myself, can do this!

You’re going to need

  • your sewing machine
  • iron
  • 2 yards of fabric
  • coordinating thread
  • 2 yards of elastic
  • safety pin
  • scissors

First you’ll need to pick out your fabric.  I chose a black and white damask for mine and bought it, on sale, at Hobby Lobby.  Get 2 yards of fabric.  Roughly a 70″ x 45″ rectangle.

Next, mark and cut out a 9″ square from every corner to make the perfect fitted corners of your sheets.

Align the right sides of the fabric together and sew the corners up. I recommend sewing up and down twice just to give it a good strong hold.

Once you have done that with all 4 corners, it’ll look like a crib sheet already! To finish the edges, fold up 1/2″, press with and iron (optional, but makes it a lot easier) and sew.

you can either choose to sew you elastic, exposed, now onto the sheet, or, do what I did, and go for the finished look and make a casing. To make a casing, fold that finished edge up another 1/2″, press and sew, making sure to leave about a 1″ opening to thread your elastic through.

Now take your safety pin and pin one end of your elastic to it.

Now begin threading your elastic through the 1″ opening you left in your casing.  This will probably be the longest, and most boring part of the project. Once you have it threaded all the way through, overlap the beginning and end of the elastic and sew that into place.  And there you go! You should have your perfectly finished product!

Don’t you just love it! Virtually painless, wasn’t it? And now you have a completely customizable and personal nursery! The bedding makes all the difference. And this is perfect for your toddler who has a favorite character they want, but you can’t find the bedding for.  Or those upcoming baby showers you know you have marked on your calendars.

Planning on trying it out? Have any questions or comments? Please be sure and let me know!
